Art in practice: Reconnecting clinicians with purpose
Our workshops are designed to help clinicians reconnect with their mission and strengthen their connection to each other and to their patients.
Through immersive, museum-based and studio workshops, we use the visual arts to teach core clinical skills such as observation, communication, evidence-based interpretation, and reflection.
Why our program?
I have been a practicing cardiologist and exhibiting artist for over a decade, and have taken refuge in art-making during challenging times. My mission is to enhance medical training and professional development by engaging healthcare learners in the creative process-deepening their awareness, sharpening diagnostic insight, and building empathy.
Why use art in medical education?
Art teaches us to slow down and look closely—skills vital to accurate diagnosis and compassionate care. Through guided art observation, collaborative analysis, and creative expression, participants strengthen their ability to:
-
Refine visual literacy and clinical observation.
-
Improve communication and teamwork.
-
Support professional identity formation and wellness
-
Foster empathy and humanism in clinical practice
Building resilience and fostering well-being
Alongside our educational mission, we recognize that healthcare providers are under immense strain. Our art sessions also serve as intentional spaces for reconnection, creativity, and well-being. Through drawing, looking, and reflecting, participants rediscover the joy and meaning in their work.
Who we work with
We collaborate with medical schools, residency programs, teaching hospitals, and international institutions to offer workshops tailored to learners at all levels—from students to seasoned clinicians.
What clinicians are saying
“Participating in this workshop during a global pandemic felt transformative, like a moment of clarity after many long months of difficult work, one that I have been able to recreate when I've returned back to my drawing book since the workshop.
A few days after the workshop, l ran into one of my colleagues - another participant in the same drawing session - in the stairwell at work. He happened to have his sketchbook, and showed me his sketches of owls and other birds from the session! Truly, pair-sharing at its finest and an amazing moment of connection between us."
— Kanade, UCSF Health
"I have never thought about drawing as a way to destress and I loved it and will try more on my own. I loved sharing and seeing what other people were working on. I loved the mix of artistic experiences that were present."
— Drawing to Decompress
“It was incredibly inspiring to learn from you as someone who manages to keep both "physician" and "artist" at the core of who they are. Having been raised by immigrant parents, I wasn't always supported in my artistic endeavors, so it was encouraging to hear about your background and story of how you got to where you are. Thank you so much for sharing your time and wisdom!”
— Humanities Consortium
"That session just made me re-realize how much is out there and how much there is to do and I can't waste any more time! | now want to take art lessons in various mediums."
— Thad, UCSF Health
